Christmas is just over two weeks away and at Lakewater Press we’re on day four of our holiday blog hop.

Between December 1 and the 24th we’re sharing holiday interviews with our authors and the Lakewater Press staff.

It’s an excellent opportunity for us to get to know each other a little better, and to give our readers a peek behind the scenes–or pages.

Perhaps you’ll even find a new blog to follow, or your next favourite book.

Be sure to read all the way to the bottom for our holiday giveaway.

What are your chances of having snow on Christmas Day? Pretty slim in my opinion, and based on my research  – because I love to research – my town has had only 18 Christmases with more than a trace amount of snow since 1893, and only Continue reading →

American classic, Jack London

The Call of the WildIt would be fair to say that in his youth Buck was a bit of a lazy charmer.

Sure, he worked out – hunting and long runs outdoors kept down the fat and hardened his muscles – but his folks were well-to-do and there was no expectation that Buck need find something useful to keep himself occupied.

If he’d read newspapers he might have known trouble was brewing far away that would threaten his privileged lifestyle. Continue reading →

The House of Hidden Mothers

The house of hidden mothersOnce upon a time I had no scruples about giving up on a book: if I wasn’t gripped a quarter of the way in¸ I chucked it into a corner and forgot about it.

And then I joined a book club and it became morally incumbent to carry on reading to THE END.

But, oh, Myra Syal’s third novel The House of Hidden Mothers was a real test of endurance.

It sounded so promising too: London-based Shyama, 48, Continue reading →

Review: Books about children can teach adults so much about grief, love and life

27 Monday Nov 2017

Books featuring children don’t feature highly on The Novels I Have Read list, and books featuring children coping with grief are similarly low on my To Be Read pile.

So it was a surprise to enjoy two books which both have young girls as their central character and grief as the main premise.

And if it seems odd to enjoy books about grief, let me add that although there were moments of touching sadness in both novels, there was also wisdom and humour. It seems there is much to be learned about grief, love and life – by adults as well as by children. Continue reading →

Review: Springsteen points to land of hopes and dreams in Barbara Quinn’s Valentine to the Jersey shore

Springsteen (2)It’s not often a book comes along where people, place and plot are so intertwined that one doesn’t work without the other.

Or one that demands to be read to crashing drums and flashing lights.

But then if you came home to find your husband with his face between the long, silky legs of another woman, you’d make a bit of a song and dance about it too.

Especially if you’d only put clean sheets on the bed the day before.  Continue reading →

Review: RIP to Helen Cadbury, whose Sean Denton novels are synonymous with Yorkshire

Race to the KillIt’s always a little sad to discover a new author after he or she has died.

Even more sad when the author is just 52 and has only two other books to her name.

Of course, there’s the sympathy one feels as one woman to another one feels for anyone who dies so young.

But, there’s also the rather selfish sorrow that there will be no more stories from a writer whose work has become synonymous with Yorkshire. Continue reading →
