Today’s interviewee: Mia Kerick, a YA author of LGBTQ fiction.

Mia KerrickHello everyone: I’m looking forward to the Lakewater Press release of All Boy in October 2018.

I can hardly wait! (Not particularly patient here.) I LOVE my characters Jayden and Callie. Their story needs to be told.

Your blog (url): I have recently created a new YA blog: www.miakerickya.com

I had so much fun putting it together – I used a “diverse people” theme, which runs throughout the blog. Check out all of the tiny adorable people illustrations on each page—they are EVERYWHERE!  Continue reading

Review: Treat yourself to Marie Gameson’s quirky tale of the deceased Mr Gadd

Mr GaddA word of advice: make sure you set aside plenty of time to read Marie Gameson’s quirky, slightly perplexing, story of The Giddy Career of Mr Gadd (deceased).

At 265 pages, it’s not an especially long book but I guarantee that as soon as you read the last ambiguous sentence, you’ll want to go right back to the beginning and start all over again.

This is probably one of the most intriguing novels I’ve read in a long time. And hard to pigeon-hole too.  Continue reading

Where do you live? Gold Coast, Australia

What are your chances of having snow on Christmas Day? Well, absolutely zero if I stay home. Christmas is during the summer on this side of the world which means hot, humid, and delightful.

Kate and dogBack in England, where I lived in the south east of the country until my mid-thirties, it snowed once on Christmas Day; otherwise it was cold, grey, and drizzly.

Do you have any favorite holiday traditions? Christmas Day has changed a little for me since moving to Australia.

It’s the same but different, and I’m pretty happy to embrace the new traditions we’re creating as a family. Continue reading

What are your chances of having snow on Christmas Day? Pretty slim in my opinion, and based on my research  – because I love to research – my town has had only 18 Christmases with more than a trace amount of snow since 1893, and only Continue reading

Review: Jack London’s American classic questions how deep is The Call of the Wild?

Tags

,

The Call of the WildIt would be fair to say that in his youth Buck was a bit of a lazy charmer.

Sure, he worked out – hunting and long runs outdoors kept down the fat and hardened his muscles – but his folks were well-to-do and there was no expectation that Buck need find something useful to keep himself occupied.

If he’d read newspapers he might have known trouble was brewing far away that would threaten his privileged lifestyle. Continue reading

Review:  tangled plotting mars Myra Syal’s third novel The House of Hidden Mothers

Tags

The house of hidden mothersOnce upon a time I had no scruples about giving up on a book: if I wasn’t gripped a quarter of the way in¸ I chucked it into a corner and forgot about it.

And then I joined a book club and it became morally incumbent to carry on reading to THE END.

But, oh, Myra Syal’s third novel The House of Hidden Mothers was a real test of endurance.

It sounded so promising too: London-based Shyama, 48, Continue reading

Review: Books about children can teach adults so much about grief, love and life

Books featuring children don’t feature highly on The Novels I Have Read list, and books featuring children coping with grief are similarly low on my To Be Read pile.

So it was a surprise to enjoy two books which both have young girls as their central character and grief as the main premise.

And if it seems odd to enjoy books about grief, let me add that although there were moments of touching sadness in both novels, there was also wisdom and humour. It seems there is much to be learned about grief, love and life – by adults as well as by children. Continue reading
